Ron has pursued pyrography as a hobby off and on since the age of nine, when he received a woodburning kit as a gift. In 2012, what began as a personal project to burn all of the table center pieces for his wedding led to encouraging feedback as well as requests for commissioned work from family and friends. As word of mouth has led to more commissions, he has continued to refine his technique as well as expand his repertoire to include his skills as a woodworker. Ron’s focus is on creating beautiful functional pieces that celebrate the natural wood, as well as provide a canvas for his pyrography.
Ron loves the challenges presented in this medium. As he says, “It’s unforgiving in an exciting way. If you make a mistake you’re either starting over or taking up the sander.” Most of Ron’s work is produced from a variety of source images, including vintage designs, his own photographs, or (as with most commissioned work) photographs provided by his clients. Despite the accuracy shown in his designs, all pyrography is done by hand with a burning pen – no lasers!
